The right to self-determination
IRIS MARIA RIVEIRO BELLO | 2010, 8 DecemberIs self-determination an everybody´s right to withdraw their country, to secede? If we accept that possibility, the world-wide political panorama might turn unstable.
Self-determination is the right of nations to decide on its own statality. It does not allow a little group of people to create its own country. Quite opposite, self-determination operates when a minority asks to recover the political organization it had before. The essential requirement for the new nation would be the cultural singularity of the community. As an example, I will mention Ukraine.
Historically, self-determination has been enforced by the main political powers to areas previously identified. Self-determination was conceived as a punishment after the world war in 1918 and nazi imperialism in 1945. It was the means to carry out decolonization process, also.
